Information for Staff
Noise Level
As the library is a busy research centre often with more than one class present as well as visiting small groups, it is necessary to keep the noise level of a class to a minimum. Whilst it is not expected that classes work in total silence, efforts should be made to ensure that all students are on task thus keeping the noise to a minimum.
Be aware of other teachers giving instructions to their classes. It is at those times that they would appreciate your class making as little noise as possible. Where possible prevent students from wandering around and interacting with others.
Chairs
The mobile swivel chairs that are provided should not be removed from the computer workstations. The mobile computer workstation chairs should not be taken to the student worktables nor should they be used by students to move around the library. At the end of each period each chair should be pushed in so that the seat is under the table.
Entry
Classes should line up outside the library and under the direction of the teacher enter the library. On entry classes should move quietly to their location so as not to disturb other library users. Students using the stairs should step softly up the steps.
Rubbish
Small bins are provided in all the areas of the library. At the end of each period scan the working area of your students and any rubbish that has been left on the floor or on the tables should be cleaned and placed in the nearest bin.
Returning of used resources
Library resources used by students should not be left on worktables, the surrounds of the computer workstations or placed in piles on library shelving. Most resources should be returned to where they were obtained from. In those instances where the origin of resources is not known then the students should hand these items in at the Help Desk.
Borrowing groups
Avoid sending all students who wish to borrow a resource to the Help Desk in the last 10 minutes of the period. Rather teachers with classes that wish to borrow resources during the period should release small groups of six students to go to the Help Desk to borrow resources. When that group has been processed then send the next group and so on. Staggering these groups throughout the period will avoid congestion at the Help Desk.
Computer access
All ground floor areas have computer access. Each area has
colour coded, numbered computers. Your class will have access
only to those computers allocated to that area. Students can use
computers in other areas provided they are not in use. An
additional set of six laptops can be requested at the time of
booking to supplement the desktop computers in the area booked.
Teachers need to ensure that all laptops are returned to the
trolley at the end of the period.
Students visiting library
All visiting students must report in to the Help Desk on arrival and hand over their pink slips. The pink slips of visiting small groups should include the full name of all the students sent and clearly indicate the time allocation for the visit. No more than four students should be sent to the library at one time.
Food and drink
Food and drink should not be taken into the library.
Student access to bags outside the library
Students should only be permitted access to their bags during classes if they are within line of sight of teachers, or they have been issued with a leave pass.
Tests
Students should not be sent to the library to complete tests.
Literature Centre (upstairs)
English classes have priority to this area. It can accommodate a class of 32 students. Other learning area classes may book this area when not in use by English classes. Be aware that there is no computer access in this area and that teachers need to maintain their presence on the floor whilst students are present.
Booking of library class work areas
Teachers who book the same period of the week for an extended period of time (more than two weeks) must be prepared to give up some of those periods to other teachers who otherwise would be prevented from using the library. Teachers should not book the same period for more than five weeks.
Class bulk loans
Sometimes a class may not be able to book into the library as the library is already booked out by other classes. In those instances the teacher of the class unable to gain entry to the library may request a bulk loan of resources on a certain topic. Please check that the classes booked into the library are not using the same resources. If they are then a bulk loan will not be possible.
All resources included in the bulk loan are issued on the library computer to the class teacher. The bulk loan items are placed into a trolley and are collected at the beginning of the period and returned at the end of the period by students from the class concerned. On return to the library the bulk loan items are checked in. If there are any missing items from the bulk loan the teacher to whom the bulk loan items were issued to will be responsible for the tracking down and return of any missing items.
Teacher-Librarian assistance
When requiring teacher-librarian assistance please use the following codes on the library booking sheet when booking in your class and discuss particular requirements with the teacher-librarian:
TL 1 = Teacher-Librarian to be on hand to assist students
TL 2 = Teacher-Librarian to introduce resources on a topic
TL 3 = Teacher-Librarian to provide instruction on one particular skill eg. Mind mapping
TL 4 = Teacher-Librarian assistance sought in developing and working with class teacher to deliver a unit of work involving the research process
Please discuss with the teacher librarian your requirements and provide a copy of the assignment. If the above codes are not used it will be assumed that teacher-librarian assistance is not needed.
AV Bookings
When booking multimedia hardware such as data projectors,
laptops, digital or video cameras and Clickview requests email

the IT and library staff who will then enter your booking on
the equipment booking sheets. You should receive a confirmation

visual services library technician (ext. 448). Please note that
24 hours notice should be given when booking such equipment. The
technician staff are also able to train staff in the use of such

Data Projectors
These are delicate and expensive items. It costs several hundred
dollars to replace each light bulb. Students are therefore not
permitted to move or operate the data projectors.
Please allow for five minutes at the beginning of the period for
the data projector to be set up and after use the equipment will
be packed up by the technician. Note that each projector
requires a cool down time after use before switching off.
Teacher
loans
Teachers have term length loans. Please note that all
library resources need to be returned to the library at the end
of each year. Teachers are most welcome to borrow resources over
the holiday periods.
