Primary Student Wellbeing

We believe that a student’s wellbeing is integral to their learning and growing, and identify that all children must be known, loved and belong, to thrive. Students at our College are nurtured and encouraged to discover and express their unique and God-given gifts through a whole school, strength-based approach that seeks to provide every student with the strongest foundation possible to reach their goals. We know learning is optimised and wellbeing is enhanced when students feel connected to others and form healthy, safe, trusting relationships so we prioritise supporting and protecting healthy relationships within our community and commit to live out our values of loving mercy, seeking wisdom, loving justice and walking humbly with God and each other. The Primary school has a well-developed protective behaviors curriculum and uses research-validated principles and programs to guide our efforts to build strength, faith and resilience in our students. Our students are supported by their teachers and members of the Student Care Team who provide age-appropriate, value-based practice that nurture their social, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive growth, promoting positive relationships and self-efficacy.

The Primary Staff aim to ensure that each child is provided with opportunities for social, educational and emotional development in a warm and positive environment. A buddy system is a successful feature of the LJBC Primary School, with Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 students partnered with Early Years students, joining together for positive experiences such as Christmas and Easter activities, Mothers and Fathers Day stalls, and assisting in small groups for fun and engaging activities.

The Primary School mascots LJ the Lion and BC the Bear, provide positive role models and warmly welcome children back to school, attend assemblies and special events.

The Primary Student Care Team partner with teachers and caregivers, working collaboratively to provide holistic care for students. The Care team are involved in teaching Christian education, facilitating SEL programs, running lunchtime and after school activities, worship assemblies and special events.

We encourage students to use their voice, to share their ideas, and offer their talents in the service of their community. Our students and families are generous and wholeheartedly serve others and raise funds throughout the year.

Each and every student is a known and valued contributor to our community. LJ Awards are given at class assemblies to celebrate our students and recognise excellence in character and endeavour. We create a positive school environment by identifying the unique qualities of individual students and honour their contribution to our community. Our Aussie of the Month award is a recognition of civic contribution and rewards behaviours that reflect a respect and love for community.

Secondary Student Wellbeing

Lake Joondalup Baptist College is large enough to provide a wealth of opportunities, yet small enough for each individual student to be known, cared for and valued. Our Wellbeing Program is an integral part of an environment where staff lead by example, students’ voices are valued, and where diversity and personal excellence are celebrated across a school community that champions the unique value of every individual.

Our Dean of Students, together with six Heads of House head the program, which is implemented by a team of teachers. The Heads of House provide care, while the College Chaplains provide spiritual guidance, relationship support and encouragement for all students. Complex issues requiring more in-depth support and intervention, or issues that do not appear within the school context will generally be referred for external support.

Our Model of Wellbeing is adapted from the Positive Psychology Model developed by Martin Seligman. We use the acronym PERMAH- placing value on Positive emotions, Engaging with schooling, developing good Relationships, finding Meaning and the satisfaction of Attainment alongside the development of good Health. We work from a strengths approach, with a focus on Character Strengths to support student Wellbeing. Student care, wellbeing and an appreciation of the social, ethical and cultural influences that shape our lives, are supported by our wellbeing programs, which are designed to reflect the students’ needs at different stages of their development. From Year 7 to 12, our students are encouraged to identify and use their personal strengths and to understand and develop their own Character Strengths.

This model is visible through the importance we place on offering students a diverse range of activities and challenges. Our broad range of co-curricular options, extensive camps, community service, leadership and mentoring programs alongside our academic offering ensures students have the opportunity to be challenged and engaged in a Christian setting. We work with our students to help them set goals that are aspirational and provide them with the opportunity to use all their gifts to flourish and achieve their potential.

Year 7 and 8

With Year 7 being a major intake year for LJBC, we see students from neighbouring primary schools begin their Secondary school journey and work hard to ensure all students have a smooth transition.

In the Lower Secondary school, we focus on fostering independence and resilience in our Year 7 and 8 students, as well as a positive classroom culture.

Year 9

This is a time where students are more in charge of their learning, increased independence and developing a positive sense of identity. Year 9 is a pivotal year in the transition from adolescence to emerging adulthood where The Rite Journey Program assists students in this transition. The five-day bush camp, challenges our students by taking them out of their comfort zones and allows them to appreciate nature, experience mindfulness and try out new things in a safe and supportive environment. Students in Year 9 are encouraged to get involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award program

Year 10, 11 and 12

Year 10 embraces the start of their Senior Secondary years where students focus on their goals and career aspirations. Students are encouraged to serve others in the Community, allowing them to grow in character while further developing their problem-solving skills, and better understand their civic responsibility.

Socially students attend the Year 10 River Cruise, Year 11 Soiree or their Year 12 Ball and Valedictory Dinner, all of which are highlights of the year. The Wellbeing Days, co-curricular opportunities and presentations by guest speakers are times where students fill their social and emotional toolbox, with the tools required for them to flourish in wherever their giftings take them.
